Be they Thoroughbreds from the racetrack, from families no longer able or choosing to care for them, from the auction block or a feed lot, each is lovingly spared and welcomed to their sanctuary by one great lady who continues to be intensely passionate about providing these magnificent animals a safe place for comfort and healing. Celia Sciacca has known horses since the age of 10, and although she herself barely measures 5' 1", she has ridden, trained, and helped managed horses all of her adult life. It is the intensity of her passion in caring for these discarded animals that stands her tall.
Having viewed a film taken by a hidden camera showing how horses were being put down in preparation for meat sales, it was that haunting video that led Celia's efforts to retrieve as many horses as she could, many of which she brought to her ranch to be healed and cared for until ready for adoption.
In what best can be described as an earthy, ramshackle stretch of ranch land in the midst of Rancho Santa fe, Celie through her efforts these past 35 years, together with her patchwork of volunteers and fundraising efforts to help defray the enormous cost has manage to place well over 3,000 horses to caring families.
Laughing Pony Rescue is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate unwanted and abused horses of all breeds. Each penny of every donation is spent toward the care and feeding of the animals.
Ceilia believes in the Mantra that saving one horse may not change the world, but it will change the world for that one horse.
