For six decades, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center has been an important part of the San Diego community, dedicated to educating and empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in 1966, the nonprofit has grown into a remarkable organization serving more than 400 adults through innovative programs designed to encourage independence, creativity, practical skills and meaningful participation in the community. Its programs encompass education, vocational training, employment opportunities, culinary and creative arts, adaptive computer training, aquatics and other experiences that help individuals realize their potential while enjoying dignity and purpose throughout their lives.
That mission was celebrated in grand style on August 15 at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, where supporters gathered for the 48th Annual Haute with Heart Fashion Show and Luncheon. This year’s theme, “Hidden Diamonds,” carried special significance as the organization celebrated its 60th anniversary. The afternoon brought together fashion, philanthropy and longtime friends of the Center for one of its signature fundraising traditions.
Festivities began with a lively pre-luncheon reception featuring champagne, live music, boutique shopping and a silent auction. Guests then moved into the ballroom for a full-course luncheon and fashion show, accompanied by a live auction and entertainment. The Society of the Sacred Heart was honored during this milestone year, with Barbara Thunder Barnes serving as Host Chair and Angel Kleinbub as Honorary Chair.
Beyond the glamour of the runway, Haute with Heart remains firmly rooted in purpose. Proceeds from the event provide vital support for St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center and the programs that enrich the lives of the adults it serves. As the Center marked its 60th anniversary, the gathering offered a fitting reminder that its greatest legacy can be found in the opportunities it creates every day—helping individuals discover their talents, develop greater independence and live lives filled with creativity, connection and possibility.
