Las Patronas Luncheon

In a heartfelt gathering that blended philanthropy with celebration, Las Patronas recently hosted its annual Beneficiary Luncheon at The Marine Room in La Jolla, where members, nonprofit leaders, and supporters came together to honor a year of giving back to the San Diego community.

At the luncheon, Las Patronas presented more than $300,000 in checks to their major beneficiary organizations, marking the culmination of the fundraising cycle tied to the 78th Annual Jewel Ball — “Meet Me in Marrakesh.” The funds will support vital capital projects for local nonprofits that serve a broad spectrum of community needs. During the event, leaders emphasized the transformative effect these gifts have on the organizations and the populations they serve.

The six major beneficiaries included groups addressing everything from accessibility and community shelter improvements to vital transportation needs for service delivery. In addition to these significant gifts, Las Patronas also awarded Legacy Society grants to other local nonprofits, amplifying the impact of their work well beyond the luncheon itself.

A Legacy of Giving: Las Patronas’ History and Mission

Las Patronas is one of San Diego’s most enduring philanthropic organizations. Founded in 1946 by a dedicated group of La Jolla women, its mission has always been to support charitable institutions throughout San Diego County. The primary vehicle for raising funds is the annual Jewel Ball, a signature gala event held each August at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club. Over the decades, this elegant fundraiser has become a beloved tradition and a major source of community support.

Since its inception, Las Patronas has awarded nearly $30 million in grants to more than a thousand local nonprofit organizations, helping to fund initiatives in health, education, social services, cultural arts, youth programs, and more.

What makes Las Patronas unique is not just its financial generosity, but its all-volunteer model. Members contribute countless hours of planning, fundraising, and service throughout the year — from organizing the Jewel Ball to conducting site visits and participating in the grant process. Their work ensures that funds are allocated thoughtfully and that they reflect the most pressing needs in the community.

Impacting the Community, One Grant at a Time

The grants awarded by Las Patronas — both major and minor — have helped organizations purchase essential equipment, improve facilities, expand services, and launch new programs that directly benefit residents across San Diego County. Whether it’s supporting transportation for individuals with disabilities, enhancing shelter services, or bolstering arts and educational initiatives, the ripple effects of these gifts are felt widely.

Over the years, beneficiaries have included a diverse array of groups working in areas such as senior care, foster youth support, arts and culture, health and wellness, and community education. This wide reach reflects Las Patronas’ deep commitment to strengthening the safety net for all residents.

Looking Ahead

With each luncheon and Jewel Ball, Las Patronas continues to build on its legacy of community support and civic leadership. As the organization heads into future fundraising seasons, members remain focused on expanding their impact, building new partnerships, and empowering the next generation of nonprofit leaders — all while celebrating the spirit of giving that defines Las Patronas.
