Diamond Anniversary Gala Honors Six Decades of Making a Difference
For six remarkable decades, Autism Society San Diego has been a beacon of hope, understanding, and opportunity for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families. Founded in 1966 by a dedicated group of parents seeking greater awareness, resources, and acceptance, the organization has evolved into one of the region’s most respected advocates for autism inclusion. Through its unwavering commitment to education, advocacy, recreation, and community engagement, the Society has helped transform countless lives while fostering a culture in which individuals of all abilities are celebrated, supported, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
Central to the Society’s mission is its impressive range of programs designed to enrich lives and create meaningful connections. Among its most beloved initiatives is Surf Camp, which celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2026, introducing thousands of autistic children and young adults to the exhilaration of surfing while developing confidence, independence, and essential water safety skills. Other signature programs include Camp I CAN, adaptive aquatics, recreational activities, family gatherings, adult social programs, and educational resources. Together, these initiatives provide opportunities for personal growth, friendship, and a sense of belonging while offering invaluable support to families navigating the challenges and triumphs of autism.
On October 3, 2026, Autism Society San Diego commemorated its extraordinary 60-year journey with a milestone Diamond Anniversary Gala at the elegant Town & Country Resort in Mission Valley. Appropriately themed Shine Bright Like a Diamond, the celebration brought the organization's six decades of dedication into focus, honoring its remarkable history while looking toward an even more inclusive future. The evening's program featured dinner, entertainment, special recognitions, and opportunities for meaningful connections among supporters, community leaders, families, and advocates united by a shared commitment to the autism community. The occasion also highlighted the importance of continued philanthropic support to sustain and expand the Society's vital programs throughout San Diego County.
A particularly meaningful aspect of the Diamond Anniversary celebration was its recognition of three distinguished honorees representing the organization's past, present, and future. Tammy Anderson was honored for her pioneering contributions to the Society's aquatic programs, including the development of Surf Camp and swimming initiatives that have enriched countless lives. The YMCA of San Diego County received recognition for its longstanding partnership and commitment to inclusive recreation, particularly through Camp I CAN. Looking toward the future, the San Diego Tourism Authority was recognized for its leadership in advancing accessibility and helping establish San Diego as a welcoming destination for autistic travelers and their families. Each honoree reflected a different chapter in the Society's extraordinary legacy of service.
More than a celebration of longevity, the Diamond Anniversary Gala represented a powerful tribute to the families, volunteers, professionals, and community partners whose compassion and determination have shaped Autism Society San Diego over the past 60 years. As the organization embarks upon its seventh decade, its mission remains as relevant and inspiring as ever: to build a community where autism is understood, differences are embraced, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive. The anniversary served as a reminder that the true brilliance of a diamond lies not simply in its sparkle, but in its enduring strength — a fitting symbol for an organization whose legacy continues to illuminate lives throughout San Diego.
