For more than five decades, Serving Seniors has helped San Diego’s older adults living in poverty lead healthier, more independent lives. Founded in 1970, the nonprofit provides nutritious meals, housing support, health and social services, and opportunities for connection—addressing both everyday needs and the isolation many seniors face. 

Last evening’s Sunshine Gala, held September 19 at the Hilton San Diego/Del Mar, celebrated that mission with an evening dedicated to supporting local seniors. The program paired a cocktail reception and dinner with music and dancing featuring The Doo Wop Project, whose Broadway performers bring fresh energy to classic harmonies. With a nostalgic 1950s-and-’60s jukebox theme, the gala connected entertainment with a lasting purpose: helping older San Diegans live with dignity, stability, and companionship.

The published schedule began with an outdoor reception at 5 p.m., featuring an open bar, passed hors d’oeuvres, raffle prizes, and interactive activities. Dinner and the indoor program followed at 6:15 p.m., with the show and dancing scheduled for 8 p.m. Guests were encouraged to embrace the evening’s retro spirit with cocktail attire or outfits inspired by the jukebox era, including poodle skirts and leather jackets.

The featured entertainment, The Doo Wop Project, blends traditional street-corner harmonies with contemporary songs reimagined in a vintage style. That mix of familiar classics and playful reinterpretations gave the evening its musical focus, while Serving Seniors’ mission remained at its heart.
